Harstine Island Waterfront Real Estate

Harstine Island sits between Case Inlet to the west, Dana Passage to the south, Peale Passage to the southwest, and Pickering Passage to the northwest. Harstine Island is the third largest island in the South Sound, with Vashon Island and Bainbridge Island being larger. There's approximately 19 square miles of upland property which averages 200 feet in elevation above sea level. Most of the island is covered with second growth Douglas fir, western red cedar, hemlock, madrona, maple and alder with a dense undergrowth of ferns, evergreen huckleberry and salal brush. Beaches vary from beautiful sandy stretches, to gravelly, to rough and rocky with large rocks and barnacles. Clams, oysters, geoducks, mussels, crabs, and sea stars are found on most beaches.

Harstine Island has a colorful history. For an entertaining account of the History of Harstine Island, pick-up a copy of "The Island Remembers" by Beulah Hitchcock and Helen Wingert.
